Helpful guides, tips and answers to common questions about newborn, maternity and family photography in Exeter and Devon. Everything you need to feel prepared, relaxed and confident before your session.
When Should I Book a Newborn Photoshoot in Exeter?
The best time to book your newborn photoshoot in Exeter is during pregnancy, ideally between 28–36 weeks. Most photographers recommend capturing newborns within the first 14 days after birth, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curled.
However, every baby is different, and beautiful images can still be created well beyond this stage. I have photographed babies up to 16 weeks old, and each session has been just as special in its own way.
If you’ve missed the “ideal window”, please don’t worry- you are still very welcome to get in touch.
I often have availability and can advise on the best approach for your baby’s age.
Newborn sessions in Exeter and Devon are limited each month to ensure a calm, unhurried experience for every family, so early booking is always recommended- but it is never too late to ask.
When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photoshoot?
The best time for a maternity photoshoot is usually between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your bump is beautifully round, and most mums still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the session.
Every pregnancy is different, so the ideal timing can vary slightly depending on how you are feeling and your personal journey. Some clients prefer a little earlier, others closer to 36 weeks- both can work beautifully.
I always recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred date to allow a relaxed and personalised experience.
If you’re unsure about timing, feel free to get in touch- I’m always happy to advise and help you choose the best moment for your session.
What to Expect During a Newborn Photoshoot in Exeter?
A newborn photoshoot in Exeter is designed to be calm, relaxed, and completely baby-led. There is no rush and plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, and breaks whenever your baby needs them.
Sessions usually last between 1–4 hours depending on your chosen package and your baby’s pace. Everything is done gently and safely, with your baby’s comfort as the top priority.
You don’t need to worry about posing or knowing what to do- I will guide you through everything and take care of all the details so you can simply relax and enjoy the experience.
My goal is to create natural, timeless images that reflect this beautiful and very short stage of your baby’s life.
If you have any questions before your session, I’m always happy to help and guide you through the process.
What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot in Exeter?
Choosing what to wear for your maternity photoshoot in Exeter can make a big difference in how your final images look and feel.
Soft, neutral colours such as white, beige, cream, and earthy tones always work beautifully, as they keep the focus on you and your baby bump. Flowy dresses, fitted gowns, and simple fabrics that move naturally are ideal for creating timeless and elegant images.
I also offer a client wardrobe with carefully selected dresses designed specifically for maternity sessions, so you don’t need to worry if you’re unsure what to bring.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident- your session is all about you and this special stage of your journey.
If you need help choosing outfits, I’m always happy to guide you before your session.
How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session
Those first days with your baby pass in a blur- quiet, intense, beautiful.
A newborn session is simply about holding onto a small piece of that time before it changes forever.
You don’t need to prepare perfectly. In fact, the best sessions always happen when you don’t try to overthink it.
Keep things simple.
A full tummy and a sleepy baby are really all we need. Try to feed your baby just before you leave or as you arrive, so they feel settled and comfortable. Everything else can unfold naturally.
If your baby needs feeding, changing or cuddles during the session, we take our time. There is no rush. Ever.
Dress with comfort in mind.
Soft, neutral tones work best- creams, whites, beige, soft greys. These keep the focus on your baby and the connection between you, rather than clothing or distractions.
For parents, think simple and timeless. Nothing loud or heavily patterned. The aim is to keep everything calm and natural.
Don’t worry about “perfect”.
Your baby doesn’t need to behave in any particular way. Some sleep deeply, some stay wide awake, some need a bit more settling. All of it is completely normal.
The beauty is not in perfection- it’s in real moments. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours. The way they settle on your chest. The quiet in-between moments you don’t notice until you see them in photographs.
Trust the process.
Newborn sessions are slow by design. I follow your baby’s rhythm throughout, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing and breaks. Safety and comfort always come first.
You don’t need to know what to do or how to pose. I will gently guide everything, step by step, so you can simply be present with your baby.
Most importantly.
Try to come with no expectations other than spending time together.
These early days are fleeting. Your baby will never be this small again.
If you’re considering a newborn session in Exeter, I recommend booking during pregnancy to secure your space- so when your baby arrives, all you need to do is show up and enjoy the moment.
