When a dream comes true- my new studio in Exeter!

Creating my own photography studio has been a dream of mine for years- a quiet, warm and beautifully simple space where families can feel completely at ease. Today, that dream lives here in Topsham, a peaceful part of Exeter, and it’s where I welcome parents for newborn, maternity and family sessions.

The studio is bright, calm and intentionally minimal. Soft light, natural tones and gentle textures create a timeless look that works beautifully for newborn and maternity photography. I wanted a space that feels relaxed the moment you walk in- nothing overwhelming, nothing staged, just a warm, comfortable environment where real moments can unfold naturally.

Every detail has been chosen with care: cosy seating for parents, a warm and soothing atmosphere for newborns, and a clean, neutral aesthetic that photographs effortlessly. It’s a place designed not only for beautiful images, but for a peaceful experience.

If you’re looking for a calm, elegant and welcoming studio in the Exeter area, I’d love to invite you into the space that once existed only as a dream- and is now ready to hold your family’s memories.

With Love,

Alex

You’ll Never Regret Taking the Photos

Can I let you in on a little secret?

There’s never going to be a "perfect" time to book

a family photoshoot in Exeter.

Life is busy. Someone always has a runny nose, the washing basket is overflowing, and there’s always something else that feels more important.

But your children are growing anyway.

One day, they’ll be taller than you. They’ll stop reaching for your hand, and those little cuddles that happen without thinking will become much rarer.

That’s why I love family photography so much. It isn’t about perfect smiles or everyone looking at the camera. It’s about capturing your family exactly as you are right now.

The giggles, the cuddles, the muddy boots, the wind in your hair and all those little moments that make your family unique.

Years from now, your children won’t care what you were wearing or whether your hair behaved that day. They’ll just be so happy to see you in the photos with them.

So if you’ve been waiting for the "right time", maybe this is your little reminder...

You’re already making memories every single day.

Why not keep a few of them forever?

When Should I Book a Newborn Photoshoot in Exeter?

The best time to book your newborn photoshoot in Exeter is during pregnancy, ideally between 28–36 weeks. Most photographers recommend capturing newborns within the first 14 days after birth, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curled.

However, every baby is different, and beautiful images can still be created well beyond this stage. I have photographed babies up to 16 weeks old, and each session has been just as special in its own way.

If you’ve missed the “ideal window”, please don’t worry- you are still very welcome to get in touch.

I often have availability and can advise on the best approach for your baby’s age.

Newborn sessions in Exeter and Devon are limited each month to ensure a calm, unhurried experience for every family, so early booking is always recommended- but it is never too late to ask.

When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photoshoot?

The best time for a maternity photoshoot is usually between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your bump is beautifully round, and most mums still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the session.

Every pregnancy is different, so the ideal timing can vary slightly depending on how you are feeling and your personal journey. Some clients prefer a little earlier, others closer to 36 weeks- both can work beautifully.

I always recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred date to allow a relaxed and personalised experience.

If you’re unsure about timing, feel free to get in touch- I’m always happy to advise and help you choose the best moment for your session.

What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot in Exeter?

Choosing what to wear for your maternity photoshoot in Exeter can make a big difference in how your final images look and feel.

Soft, neutral colours such as white, beige, cream, and earthy tones always work beautifully, as they keep the focus on you and your baby bump. Flowy dresses, fitted gowns, and simple fabrics that move naturally are ideal for creating timeless and elegant images.

I also offer a client wardrobe with carefully selected dresses designed specifically for maternity sessions, so you don’t need to worry if you’re unsure what to bring.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident- your session is all about you and this special stage of your journey.

If you need help choosing outfits, I’m always happy to guide you before your session.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

Those first days with your baby pass in a blur- quiet, intense, beautiful.

A newborn session is simply about holding onto a small piece of that time before it changes forever.

You don’t need to prepare perfectly. In fact, the best sessions always happen when you don’t try to overthink it.

Keep things simple.

A full tummy and a sleepy baby are really all we need. Try to feed your baby just before you leave or as you arrive, so they feel settled and comfortable. Everything else can unfold naturally.

If your baby needs feeding, changing or cuddles during the session, we take our time. There is no rush. Ever.

Dress with comfort in mind.

Soft, neutral tones work best- creams, whites, beige, soft greys. These keep the focus on your baby and the connection between you, rather than clothing or distractions.

For parents, think simple and timeless. Nothing loud or heavily patterned. The aim is to keep everything calm and natural.

Don’t worry about “perfect”.

Your baby doesn’t need to behave in any particular way. Some sleep deeply, some stay wide awake, some need a bit more settling. All of it is completely normal.

The beauty is not in perfection- it’s in real moments. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours. The way they settle on your chest. The quiet in-between moments you don’t notice until you see them in photographs.

Trust the process.

Newborn sessions are slow by design. I follow your baby’s rhythm throughout, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing and breaks. Safety and comfort always come first.

You don’t need to know what to do or how to pose. I will gently guide everything, step by step, so you can simply be present with your baby.

Most importantly.

Try to come with no expectations other than spending time together.

These early days are fleeting. Your baby will never be this small again.

If you’re considering a newborn session in Exeter, I recommend booking during pregnancy to secure your space- so when your baby arrives, all you need to do is show up and enjoy the moment.

Why I Don’t Rush Newborn Sessions

One thing I always tell my clients is: there is no need to rush.

Every baby is different. Some babies settle straight away, while others need a little more time, cuddles or a feed before we continue- and that is absolutely fine.

As a newborn photographer in Exeter, I know how important it is for parents to feel relaxed and confident during their baby's first photoshoot.

My studio is a place where you can slow down, enjoy these first precious weeks and let me gently guide you through the experience.

Because newborn photography is not just about creating beautiful images.

It’s about capturing this little chapter of your family’s story in the most natural and meaningful way.
